Voles & Gophers in southern Utah

In St. George, the green parts of a yard are a magnet for burrowing rodents. Pocket gophers are the big one. They live almost entirely underground in irrigated lawns, golf-course edges, gardens, and former farm ground like Washington Fields and Hurricane Fields, pushing up fan-shaped dirt mounds, eating roots and bulbs from below, and chewing through drip lines and sprinkler pipe. Because watered soil stays soft and green all year here, they don't take much of a break. Voles are less common but turn up in thick ground cover and lawns near washes and fields, cutting narrow runways at the surface and chewing bark off shrubs and young trees.

Why it matters

Neither one comes inside, but both cause real damage outdoors. Gophers can wipe out a garden bed or a young tree in one season and chew through irrigation lines, which leads to leaks and dead zones. Voles girdle shrubs and young trees, and both breed fast enough that a few in spring can turn into many by fall.

When are voles & gophers most active around St. George?

Pocket gophers and voles in Washington County stay active year-round in irrigated lawns, gardens, and golf-course edges. Mounds and runways show up most in spring and fall, when the soil is moist and they're feeding and breeding hardest.

Are voles & gophers dangerous?

Neither one comes inside, but both cause real damage outdoors. Gophers can wipe out a garden bed or a young tree in one season and chew through irrigation lines, which leads to leaks and dead zones. Voles girdle shrubs and young trees, and both breed fast enough that a few in spring can turn into many by fall.

How do you get rid of voles & gophers?

We follow a straightforward approach: identify gopher or vole activity from the mounds, runways, and damage; set traps in active tunnels and runways; use burrow baits per label only where they're safe for pets and wildlife; advise on wire baskets and barriers, then monitor until activity stops. Every visit focuses on trapping, exclusion, and sealing entry points, not blanket spraying.

What products do you use around kids and pets?

We use EPA-registered products, applied carefully according to the label and only where pests travel, not where your family and pets spend time. Before we treat, we'll gladly explain what we're using, how long it takes to dry, and when it's fine to go back into treated areas.

What if the voles & gophers come back?

If pests come back between your scheduled visits, we come back too, and we re-treat at no charge. There's no trip fee, no extra invoice, and no back-and-forth about it.
